Tackling the drop-off: Understanding the teenage reading experience

2020 – 2023/4

Declines in book reading and attitudes toward reading throughout the teenage years have been cause for concern over the last decade. However, very little research has attempted to understand teenagers’ reading experiences from their perspective. Most teenagers engage in a wide range of literacy activities daily; however, we know little of their cognitive, social and emotional experiences with these different text types. Working closely with Scottish Book Trust, and a Teenage Advisory Panel, a mixed methods research study will be conducted to understand teenagers’ reading experiences, from their perspective.

This project will be led by Charlotte Webber and draws upon our Growing Up A Reader project. The project is funded by the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences and Scottish Book Trust.
